Find answers to our most frequently asked questions below. If you can't find what you're looking for, please reach out to our team. We would love to meet you.
- The first step is to identify what your sound concern is – why do you want a booth? If your answer is to block sound from entering/exiting the booth, your best bet will be the Double Deluxe model. The DD model is our “double wall” equivalent and has heavier/denser panels compared to the Standard Model; as a result, it is the most effective at blocking noise transference. If you are concerned at all with blocking/containing low-frequency sounds, we highly recommend the DD model. Applications that almost exclusively choose the DD model are: Musicians (Drummers), Industrial facilities (OSHA requirements), recording in loud environments, etc.
- If you have some sound isolation concerns but are mostly looking for a quiet space with interior acoustic tuning, the Standard can be a great and cost-effective solution. This is our version of a “Single wall” booth. Applications that elect to go with the Standard model include: voice actors, vocal training, podcasting, ASMR recording, etc.
- If you are still unsure and would like to discuss your specific situation, please give us a call – that is what we are here for!
Though GK Soundbooth, Inc. manufactures sound isolation booths with great sound isolation qualities, these booths are not 100% soundproof. There is NO such thing as completely soundproof modular enclosures! These booths are designed to lower the volume of exterior noise and condition the sounds generated inside the booth. They are not designed or built to block out/contain sound completely. Lower bass frequencies are harder to block out than higher pitched sounds. The lower the frequency of the sound concern, the more you will have other issues too, such as vibrations, which may need isolation treatments.
Of course. Whether you are looking for your home, classroom, lab, factory floor, etc. we understand that floor space is valuable, and ceiling clearance can also be an issue. As a completely custom manufacturer, we can build a booth to fit your exact space. The best part? We will modify the dimensions to meet your specification at no additional cost to you.
- Here again, GK Soundbooth, Inc. is ahead of the pack! Our ventilation systems are truly one of a kind. Once assembled, GK booths are very ‘tight’ to achieve the desired acoustic isolation. So, it is necessary to supply adequate fresh air to replace the stale air and keep the interior comfortable. Our ventilators do not heat or cool the air in the booth, but rather replace it with the air supply in the room in which you have assembled the booth.
- We begin with ultra-quiet fans that are sized to replace 100% of the air volume in the booth every 2 minutes or less. For special purpose booths – medical testing involving aerobics, for example – we can install higher-powered fans to replace air volume more quickly. Noise levels of fans vary according to the size of fan that comes with your booth. Most of our fans have a dB(A) of 20, though higher values can apply to high-speed fans, where required. The larger the fan and the more CFM the fan circulates the louder it will be. We have designed and engineered an anti-vibration isolation ring around the fan(s) to help eliminate vibration issues (an issue experienced in other “comparable” ventilation systems). Despite being designed to minimize sound output, some microphones can pick up the fan sounds. The solution for this is typically postproduction editing, but some clients also take advantage of our convenient wireless remote-control system. This allows you to turn the ventilation system on and off on demand.
- If you purchase a GK sound isolation booth, we permanently attach our ventilation unit(s) to the wall or ceiling panel(s) you select. This prevents sound leakage and allows you choose where in the booth the air supply will flow – an important detail for comfort and recording. Also, it is just one less step you don’t have to do when assembling the booth. This makes GK Soundbooth, Inc. booths that much quicker and easier to assemble.
- If you have a DIY sound booth and are looking for an airflow solution, we do sell our ventilation systems independently.
A key feature of GK’s design is ease of assembly and disassembly. Our booths are assembled, disassembled and reassembled using no tools, and no construction or acoustic knowledge is required. Each booth comes with assembly instructions written uniquely for that product. The biggest hurdle to assembly is the weight of the panels – sometimes up to 200 lbs. each – which is necessary to achieve the required sound-blocking properties. We encourage assembly by teams, and depending on the size of the booth the supplied instructions will suggest your team size. If you prefer not to do the assembly yourself, anyone who can follow directions and lift heavy items will be capable of installation. Again, no acoustic knowledge required.
Lighter-panel option: GK has an optional design feature where panels are smaller and lighter. This option is particularly useful where your space for the booth involves carrying panels up the stairs (no elevator) or where booths are taller than standard. If this is interesting to you, mention it during the consultation phase.
If you choose to work with GK, you will get a high quality, completely custom sound isolation booth at a fair price. We take the time to understand customer needs and design custom solutions. You will not be ushered to buy a mass-produced inventory product, instead we will design and build a solution from scratch, suited specifically for your needs.
Give us a call at 541-947-2602 or email us at: sales@gretchken.com. If you already know exactly what you would like, be as specific as possible in your request and we will get back to you with a detailed written quote. If you need some guidance on what the best sound solution for you might be, one of our knowledgeable team members will work one on one to develop a solution/quote for what you are looking for.
Yes, we welcome custom orders! GK Soundbooth, Inc. is one of the only sound isolation booth manufactures that is equipped and able to process custom orders. We will handcraft a sound isolation booth or box of practically any size or shape, with unlimited special features to meet your specifications. All you have to do is ask.
After we finish fabrication, we always assemble each booth at the factory as the last quality control measure. We will then disassemble the booth and pack the components into a large, solid wood crate(s) to protect it during shipping. Booths are delivered to you by a trucking company (large freight truck). Once your crate(s) arrives, you can take the booth panels out of the crate, one by one, and assemble the booth at your desired location.
No, sales staff at GK do not work on commission. This way, you get honest answers to your questions and the right product recommendations for your specific needs. At GK Soundbooth, Inc. you will NOT get high pressure salespeople pushing products that may not work for your application just to make a sale. We provide free advice on our product lines without any strings attached.
Our firm belief is that given our custom approach, build quality and fair pricing, purchasing a booth from GK ends up being a better long-term investment than a DIY solution. Our knowledgeable team will work with you directly to understand your needs and suggest the best fit – eliminating the headache and hours spent of research. The quality and modular nature of our enclosures ensures that they are built to last and can be assembled, disassembled, and reassembled without compromising the structural integrity. You are not getting an inventory product – your booth is designed and built just for you without the hassle of doing it yourself.
If you have already gone the DIY route and are looking for an air flow solution, we do sell our pre-built ventilation systems.
We are a small family-owned business that operates out of a rural town in SE Oregon. In an effort to continue innovating and delivering the best possible product at the lowest price, we prioritize R&D over costs associated with retail sales and advertising. Additionally, we keep zero inventory, so that every sound isolation enclosure is custom built. That being said, we have an amazing community of customers spanning all industries – some in public spaces, some private. In our experience, our customers are often eager to engage with like-minded people and look forward to showing off or speaking about their GK enclosure. If this sounds interesting to you, let us know and we can connect you.
Yes. The most common modifications to ensure that your booth is ADA compliant are:
- Increasing the door width to 36”
- Adding a steel-fabricated door ramp. This ramp is not permanently affixed to the door and can be moved to save space when not in use.
- Knowing what furniture/equipment will be in your booth and selective a size that meets the ADA clearance for turnaround. Most customers need a booth that is at least 6’ x 6’
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure all elements adhere to local codes and regulations.
- We are happy to help design a booth that fits your stated requirements, but we are not experts on all building, state and company codes/laws. In our experience, our modular sound isolation enclosures qualify as “assembled furniture” and as such do not require permitting. It is the customer’s responsibility to understand local requirements.
- It is sometimes the case that, in order to be up to code, customers need to install a sprinkler system and/or fire-retardant foam or fabric. We are happy to design and built to those specifications, as required.
- If you are an institutional or commercial client, we will be pleased to work with your facilities team, building manager, architects, engineers, contractor etc. to explain our design specifications – another benefit to our personalized customer service.
If a modification is required to adhere to seismic retrofitting requirements, we are happy to quote and build to your specifications.
As we do not keep any inventory items, our lead time is determined entirely by what we have in the design/production queue at the time of your order, and by your choice of materials. We do our best to keep the lead time at 4-6 weeks, but it can be more or less than that depending on a variety of factors. If your project has a deadline, please be upfront and we will do what we can to accommodate.
A ‘booth’ is a modular sound isolation enclosure, and a ‘box’ is a fixed sound isolation enclosure. A box is fabricated, shipped and delivered as one, fully assembled piece. Boxes are generally smaller than 4’ x 4’ x 4’. If you are unsure, give us a call and we can work together to find the most suitable option.
As each booth is highly customized, it is impossible for us to provide exact sound reduction specifications at the time of purchase. Our fixed sound isolation enclosures will have a higher level of sound reduction than our modular booths. The box will be highly effective at sound isolation but will not be 100% soundproof.
The ventilation system on fixed sound isolation enclosures will be built into the box and includes a 35 CFM fan (this can be increased if necessary). The ventilation system will include sound baffling technology.
Of course. In order to accomplish this, we fabricate enclosures with an fiberglass panel exterior instead of our acoustic fabric. For a cleanable interior surface, we use tuftane-facing acoustic foam and a vinyl flooring material. If acoustic tuning isn’t a concern, we can also build the enclosure with fiberglass or similarly cleanable interior surfaces.
Yes! We understand how crucial this can be for various research and testing environments and have extensive experience including these features in our fabrication/design.
Fixed enclosures will be shipped fully assembled, in a custom-built wooden crate that will arrive at your facility on a freight truck. The truck will deliver the crate onto a loading dock or, if there is no loading dock, lower the crate to ground level as close as they can get to the final destination. From there, it is the customer’s responsibility to move it inside. Please be sure to measure all entry points (doors, elevators, stair wells, etc.) to ensure that the enclosure will fit. If you are sold on a fixed enclosure (not modular) and are concerned about dimensions, we will work with you to come up with a solution.
Yes! We understand how critical floor space can be in a lab/industrial environment. Our enclosures are built with sufficient strength to accommodate stacking.
Of course. Given the size of most fixed enclosures, a 1’x1’ acoustic window is the most common choice. If you decide on a larger enclosure, we also offer 1’ x 2’ and 2’ x 2’ acoustic windows.
We design these enclosures frequently. Please call with the specifics of your project.
Boxes are used most commonly in educational/research and commercial/industrial environments. The size is perfect for conducting experiments and product testing.
As we do not keep any inventory items, our lead time is determined by what we have in the design/production queue at the time of purchase and the complexity of your project. We do our best to keep the lead time at 4-6 weeks, but it can be more or less than that depending on a variety of factors. If your project has a deadline, please be upfront and we will do what we can to accommodate.
Acoustic foam is a wonderful product for absorbing sound waves and conditioning sound, but do not mistake sound absorption/conditioning for sound blocking. Acoustic foam will not block sound from going through it. To block sound you need heavy, dense materials as described in the previous answers. But acoustic foam does help to make sound waves tired, so they do not bounce around as much, or at all. This is why it is used to treat a room with a lot of echo or reverberation. It helps to create an acoustically dead room or a room without a lot of bouncing sound waves.
Acoustic foam is a special chemical blend of polyurethane foam or melamine foam that is specially designed to absorb sound waves. Other foams do not have the same properties or qualities to absorb sound properly. Acoustic foam is fairly expensive compared to other look-alike foams but is a specialty product and is expensive to manufacture from the start. There really is no good substitute for quality and performance when dealing with acoustic foams. We can help you find the right foam for your projects just give us a call.
- Class 1 acoustic foam is a Melamine product that is fire retardant (in accordance to ASTM-E84). This foam may be required for use in public buildings and typically passes fire codes. Melamine Foams: tested for ASTM E84 – Flammability.
- Class 2 (in accordance to UL-94HF-1) Acoustic foam is a treated Polyurethane foam and is considered fire inhibitive, but not fire retardant. Polyurethane Foams: NOT Tested for ASTM E84. Also, the fire inhibitive treatment will deteriorate in approximately 3 to 5 years.

Yes. These are perfect for customers who built their own sound set up but need an air flow solution.
We have a great relationship with Miracle-Ear owners and contractors. We will not pretend to be experts on all building codes and requirements throughout the country, but in our experience Miracle-Ear builds use our acoustic windows and 2” pyramid melamine acoustic foam.
Our windows ship in custom-built wooden crates to keep them as safe as possible during transport. The customer is responsible for on-site installation.
We do not provide on-site acoustic evaluation. Our sales team is highly experienced and knowledgeable and will be happy to work with you over the phone/email to diagnose and come up with solutions. If we aren’t confident in a solution due to our inability to be on-site, we will not quote the project. We may also refer you to acoustic testing experts who will do an evaluation at your site.

Technically, no. Gretchen and Ken (hence, Gretch-Ken) sold their business in 2017 to the McGowen family who now own and operate GK Soundbooth. We have built a new company, using the ‘Gretch-ken’ brand of products and retaining many of the same employees.
Every product we build is custom-fabricated for your specific needs.

There is nothing more important to us at GK than our customers! We work closely with each customer to design and fabricate enclosures that meet their exact specifications, and during that process, we often discuss classified/proprietary information relating to their products, projects or research. Although we understand why it might be helpful to prospective customers to know more about who we have worked with and the details of those projects, the privacy of our customers will always be a priority. We have many customers that have gladly shared about their experience and given us permission to post pictures of their enclosures. Check out some of our previous work!
